The Need for a Guru

Though some religious traditions advocate a ?personal God? Who can be approached directly by anyone, this position, in Vaishnava, parlance, is incomplete. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati states this succinctly in his Will this way: ?If the Supreme Personality of Godhead Narayana offers Himself, something remains unoffered, but a devotee can offer you the Lord completely.?

Unknowingly, We Hurtle Through Space

Although we sit in the still of twilight, placidly gazing at a beautiful sunset, we are hurtling through space at the rate of about 1000 miles per hour, based on the earth's rotation. In addition, if we accept the theory that earth revolves around the sun (93 million miles away) in 365 days, we are also zipping through space at the rate of 66,705 miles per hour. But Krishna makes it seem like we're not moving at all.

Saints and Swindlers

God, higher consciousness, saving souls, reincarnation therapy, meditation, and so on, we're promised the world and more, as politicians tend to assure us that if elected they will 'fight for progress, security, and culture.' On the other hand, many are duped, and we become a society of cheater and cheated. In his Will, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati's perspective on this issue is instructive.

A Devotee's Only Desire

Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura writes in his Last Will and Testament: "Our only desire is to collect the dust from the lotus feet of Sri Rupa Goswami, who fulfilled the desire of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu."

The Material World is a Test

In his Will, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati puts it this way, "This material nature, which is averse to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is an examination hall. Tolerance, humbleness, appreciation of others, etc., are favorable to develop our devotion to Hari."

Question authority!

It is popular today to question all authority. This has both positive and negative aspects. One of the benefits of following authority is mentioned in Srila Prabhupada's purport to the Srimad Bhagavatam verse 3.17.1. Therein he writes: "The difference between the demigods and ordinary human beings is that the demigods approach authority, whereas the inhabitants of this earth defy authority.

Who is Right?

In these days of apostates, parallels, spin-offs, and subtle scholarly criticism, the decision whether to be part of ISKCON or to follow another Vaisnava tradition sometimes becomes very perplexing. One of many answers for newcomers is to ask how they heard about Krsna consciousness.
