Lord Soper, in the presence of Dean Carpenter (the royal family’s ‘confessor’) inside the Dean’s living quarters at Westminster Abbey, once said to Srila Prabhupada, that he had many friends who were atheists, who he thought were really good people. Srila Prabhupada glared at him and said, “If he is atheist, he has no good qualities.” Lord Soper smirked, looked at the carpet and shook his head violently, saying, “Oh no, I couldn’t go along with that, no no. Definitely not. No.” The room became eerily silent. Dean Carpenter didn’t come to the rescue. What had been a pleasant early afternoon conversation soon came to an end, and Srila Prabhupada and his entourage departed. They returned to their own quarters, the temple at 7 Bury Place, located in a small five-story building squashed between a pub and a block of council flats.
Atheism means “no good qualities”
