Srila Prabhupada openly states he is quoting a proverb in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 5.14.14, “As the English proverb goes necessity knows no law.” This maxim is attributed to the Roman Publilius Syrus in the first century BC, to St. Augustine in the fifth century and to Oliver Cromwell in the seventeenth-century.
