19-Nov-2001 A line from a Shakespeare play reminded me of a verse (10.51.50) from the Srimad Bhagavatam. The dramatic couplet reads, “Why, what is pomp, rule, reign, but earth and dust? And live we how we can, yet die we must.” This is the Srimad Bhagavatam verse: “The body that at first rides high on fierce elephants or chariots adorned with gold and is known by the name ‘king’ is later, by Your invincible power of time, called ‘feces,’ ‘worms,’ or ‘ashes’ ” (King Mucukunda to Lord Narayana).
