Heaven is a Place on Earth

OK. It’s “true confession” time. In our radio-pervasive Western society, sometimes it’s unavoidable that one hears songs going into a shop or workplace to purchase something or to ask for a service. So one day I caught these lyrics: “Heaven is a Place on Earth.” It WAS a terrible song. But those words did start me thinking about how so many people erroneously think that they will automatically attain “heaven” AFTER dying as long as they’ve stuck to their own concept of morality or a “standard” ethical code they follow. Those words made me think even more about how much we learn as devotees. We learn of the concept of jivan mukta (liberated in this very body) and also abouttransforming our personal, communal and global environments. Srila Prabhupada writes in his purport to the Srimad Bhagavatam verse 9.10.51: “If people take to this sankirtana movement of chanting Hare Krsna, Hare Rama, they will certainly be freed from the contamination of Kali-yuga, and the people of this age will be happy, as people were in Satya-yuga, the golden age.”
