It’s almost axiomatic that there’s one genuine spiritual being among thousands of fakes and that the counterfeits unfortunately do damage whatever they do. Srila Prabhupada addresses this issue in his purport in Srimad Bhagavatam (4.25.39). He says, “Even though it is sometimes found that one may be interested in spiritual advancement, he is most likely to accept a bogus method of spiritual life, being misguided by so many pretenders.”
