God, higher consciousness, saving souls, reincarnation therapy, meditation, and so on, we’re promised the world and more, as politicians tend to assure us that if elected they will ‘fight for progress, security, and culture.’ On the other hand, many are duped, and we become a society of cheater and cheated. In his Will, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati’s perspective on this issue is instructive. He writes: “Those who mistake dishonesty to be honesty (or a crook to be a saint) will fall into great difficulty, just as a person who tries to cheat the iron smith by supplying him lead steel.”
