Canakya’s ‘Real Scholarship’

Even though he wasn’t a Vaisnava, Canakya pandita is quoted frequently throughout Srila Prabhupada’s writings, lectures, letters and conversations. One often quoted verse is Canakya’s definition of a learned person: “This is a moral injunction from Canakya-sloka (10). matrvat para-adresu para-dravyesu lostravat atmavat sarva-bhutesu yah pasyati sa panditah: ‘One who considers another’s wife as his mother, another’s possessions as a lump of dirt and treats all other living beings as he would himself, is considered to be learned.’ ” (Srimad Bhagavatam 9.10.27/purport)
