If Preaching is the Essence…

Srila Prabhupada is reputed to have said, “I want to die with my boots on.” And so many times he said that preaching, spreading Krsna consciousness, was far more important and far better than keeping it to oneself. But what if one is old, infirm or trapped by material nature into caring for a large household, or any household for that matter? I’m reminded of a true story. A European householder lived in Mayapura. One day he was cycling down Bhaktisiddhanta Road when he encountered an elderly lady struggling along on foot. She was carrying a huge bag. He spoke Bengali reasonably well. Let me help you,” he said. “We’ll put your load on my bicycle, and walk together to your village.” She eyed him suspiciously and replied in the only language she knew, “Why do you want to help me?” “Because you’re just like my mother, and I wouldn’t let my mother carry such a heavy load.” She agreed, and he attached the sack to his bike and they walked together to the village. He forgot the incident, but it so happened that this lady was well known throughout the area. She was something of village elder, a respected, influential person. She told many people about her experience with the “white sadhu” from Mayapur, and ISKCON’s reputation in the area changed dramatically. Moral: one may be unable to distribute hundreds of books, open many temples, have lots of disciples, memorize many philosophical points and treatises or ‘make’ many devotees, but the DESIRE to preach and the exhibition of saintly qualities can make PREACHING a quality versus quantity issue.
