The Evidence

It is most significant that Srila Prabhupada uses the word “evidence,” instead of “reference” or “citation,” when he refers to Vedic mantras in the standard books of knowledge he gave us. He is fond of quoting the Bhaktirasamrta Sindhu verse “sruti-smrti-puranadi-pancaratra-vidhim vina, aikantikiharer bhaktir utpatayaiva kalpate” (1.2.101). In the Caitanya Caritamrta he translates the verse this way: “Devotional service to the Lord that ignores the authorized Vedic literatures-the Upanisads, Puranas, Narada-pancaratra, etc. must be considered sentimentalism, and is simply an unnecessary disturbance in society.” In the purport to CC Adi 8.36, he explains that “due to misunderstanding Srimad Bhagavatam, people are misled regarding the science of Krsna. However, by reading Srila Vrndavana dasa Thakura’s book one can very easily understand this science.”
