The grhasta ashram has been left behind, and is usually not respected properly, but we need to keep in mind the distinction between grhasta and grhamedi. The Eleventh Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam elaborates on how grhamedhis are falsely captivated by family life, such that there is complete co-dependence between spouses until the time of death. The metaphor used is a family of pigeons.
