Caesar’s wife

In Caitanya Caritamrta Antya 3.12 Srila Prabhupada quotes a Bengali verse, which he translates as “Even if I see that Lord Nityananda has entered a liquor shop, I shall not be diverted from my conclusion that Nityananda Raya is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.” And, along similar lines, Srila Prabhupada has written in letters that `Caesar’s wife must be above suspicion.’ This tells us something about the difference between imitation and following in the footsteps. Srila Prabhupada was fond of quoting proverbs – from English literature, from the Bengali, and from Chankya Pandit. Here’s another, from his Bhagavad-gita As It Is. He begins the purport to 4.14 by saying: “As there are constitutional laws in the material world stating that the king can do no wrong,..” This, interestingly, is traceable to Sir William Blackstone (1723- 1780) who is supposed to have said, “That the king can do no wrong is a necessary and fundamental principle of the English constitution.”
